abstract = {Purpose - The purpose of this article is twofold. Its first objective is to bring to the fore the unexplored and neglected origins of social exchange theory (SET) to critique this body of conjecture. This unearthing is illustrated through focusing on the way the theory was developed and how this development was mischaracterised in literature. Its second objective is to invoke the methodological assemblage of ANTi-History and the ?close reading? notion using multiple archival sources to demonstrate their usefulness within the
critical qualitative method debate.
Design/methodology/approach - The historic character of management and organization studies is exemplified through utilizing a combination of textual sources to examine how SET emerged from within the human relations school of thought throughout much of the twentieth century. Specifically, an array of sources
(including archival data) is deployed and closely examined to trace how SET formed and became prevalent in organizational studies over the last decades.
Findings - SET is not only indebted to the human relations movement in general and to Elton Mayo's work in particular (as is well-known), but also to logical positivism and behavioralist-school psychology. As such, Homans' work marked the beginning of a new era in organizational behavior research.
Originality/value - The article highlights the role of historical analyses in interpreting mainstream constructs in organizational behavior. In doing so, it reveals how critical qualitative research leads to understanding some shortcomings of a theory and indicates potential remedies.},

This article exposes the inadequacy of agency theory for interpreting how parties coexist within a multi-stakeholder service delivery configuration under the rubric of social entrepreneurship. Using the case of Teach for America, it explores the criticisms that traditionally trained teachers direct towards the organization's members. The article does not take a side on whether these criticisms are justified. Rather, it argues that, absent a frame of
reference (e.g., appropriately adapted agency theory) for exposing the interests of disparate stakeholders to a social entrepreneurship venture, misaligned interests manifest as ill-founded mutual critique.},

It contends that honesty in presenting CSR activities is a proxy for corporate virtuosity and that syntheticity of language indexes unselfconscious honesty in corporate reporting. The study's research question is: Is there evidence that being more corporately ethical in the absence of concern about being so perceived enhances hardcore measures of organisational performance? To answer this question, a linguistic analysis of sustainability reports of firms operating in the Mining, Crude Oil Production Industry is undertaken to reveal that firms' financial performance varies as a function of a particular kind of straightforward language use in corporate reporting. This exercise provides evidence that unselfconscious corporate virtuosity is associated with better corporate financial performance. Implications for practice of this finding are explored.},

However, such an emphasis on theory glosses over one of its constraining and particularized roles in scientific explanation, namely that theory codifies predictive knowledge. Committing to theory a ?traditional' or ?critical' understanding of theory, thus amounts to embracing the view that prediction is achievable within a circumscribed field of study. Such an embrace is non-controversial in natural science. However, within the realm of management studies, it necessitates and smuggles in a strawman view of human existence, one which does not accommodate freedom and responsibility. This limitation of management theory explains its inadequate utility. This article argues that alternative avenues for management research exist.},

Such grounding has been neglected in the relevant literature since scholars have generally treated authority as a form of power and have ignored the view that authority is also a source of power. Following a review of the construct of authority as it appears in the works of noted social psychologists and critical management authors, this essay argues that Carl Friedrich's theory of authority as reasoned elaboration reveals two manifestations: authoritativeness and authoritarianism. It is argued here that managerialism draws on authoritarian ideas and practices, whereas management, as traditionally conceived, draws on authoritativeness. To promote authoritative management, therefore, is to resist (authoritarian) managerialism since authority redirects power to technical experts and professional colleagues and thereby limits managerial power.},

Accordingly, in the wake of the Industrial Revolution, the new capitalists and their agents (the emerging management class), were theoretically ill-equipped to oversee large scale productive
transformation. Hence, they turned to experts, mostly scholars who straddled the worlds of academia and the nascent enterprise
of industrial consulting. In this version of events, employees are represented in strawman terms, as either passive or predictable; in either case, as hostile but unsophisticated actors. This article presents and defends an alternative portrayal. It argues that management thought was not born of purely theoretical perspectives but, rather, is the product of a contest between theory and what employees, acting as intellectual equals, revealed to employers and pundits when theories were being applied.},

ethical values have been justified by appeals to intuition expressed injunctively and

alternative strategies for ethical justification in which conclusions are derived deductively
from purposive propositions. This essay revisits the notion of reason, purpose
and ethical justification in management to outline a purposive ethics for managers.
The implications for management practice and relevance for management researchers
of such an ethics are presented and defended.},

The thesis defended is that, at its best, the language of power in leadership activates specific linguistic functions in prescribed ways. This thesis draws on three subordinate arguments. First, to the extent that leadership is a relationship resting on voluntary obedience, it is through a process of authorisation that leaders obtain their power. Second, the way language functions are instantiated in communication determines whether social interactions are authoritative or authoritarian. The view advanced is that noble language characterises the former, base language the latter. Third and consequently, the power of leaders develops from their use of noble language. Contrasting examples illuminate this article's thesis. An agenda for leadership research and education is then outlined.},

abstract = {Managerialism has often been defi ned as an ideology, according to which the effective and effi cient running of commercial fi rms, not-for-profit organizations and public administrations is delivered by individuals who possess superior formal knowledge and expertise in management. Arguing to their exclusive education, managers deprive employers and employees of decision-making power and ensconce themselves systematically in the power structure of workplaces to advance their own interests and agenda.
The central thesis of Overcoming Managerialism is that resisting and overcoming managerialism necessitates the re-establishing of the conceptual distinction between power and authority. Second, it requires the rehabilitating of authoritative management as a protection against authoritarian practices. Authority, properly conceived, redirects power to technical experts and professionals and thereby limits managerial power. The authors discuss ten contentions which, taken together, represent a theory of the foundation of management in which authority, power and rhetoric are central
concepts.
This book combines academic scholarship with a readable critique of managerialism. It will be of interest to both management scholars and students.},

However, the ability critically to analyze these diverse perspectives is essential to practicing and aspiring managers if they are to evaluate expert opinion. montée du pouvoir des administrateurs et autres technocrates au sein des entreprises.
