abstract = {Technology diffusion and spillovers are key drivers of both innovation and economic growth. One such source of cross-border knowledge flows occurs through the introduction of inventions by foreign technological entrants into a local country or market. This paper examines the role of obtaining initial intellectual property rights on direct and indirect knowledge flows into the United States. Using a focal examiner's prior grant rate as an instrumental variable for the patent grant decision, an initial patent grant increases subsequent patent filings by 52.6 percent, indicating an increase in direct cross-border knowledge flows and sustained technological presence by foreign technological entrants. These effects are at least partially driven by an appropriation mechanism, where technological entrants increase subsequent filings for existing inventions -- or inventions already filed in other countries at the time of the initial decision. Securing a patent grant also increases the likelihood of technology spillovers to local U.S. firms by 30.5 percent, highlighting the trade-off between bargaining frictions and knowledge diffusion.},

abstract = {The Resource-Based View has been central to understanding patent litigations in patent strategy research. Recent studies, however, have found mixed results in the link between patent litigations and changes in patent production and financial performance. We advance a more nuanced study based on the Organizational Learning literature, examining patent litigations as a source of organizational learning that comprehensively occupies managerial attentive capacity. We specifically investigate two types of organizational learning, direct learning by own patent litigations and indirect learning by others' litigations, and their influence on patent production and financial performance. Based on an analysis of the semiconductor industry, we find that (a) plaintiff firms have reduced patent production, (b) industry litigation intensity further diminishes the plaintiff firms' patent production, (c) plaintiff firms have enhanced financial performance, and (d) industry litigation intensity further strengthens the plaintiff firms' financial performance.},

abstract = {In this project, we seek to evaluate the role of venture capital in the development of country-level entrepreneurial ecosystems. We propose that the value-adding role of venture capital is inversely related to the overall quality of entrepreneurial ecosystems. We specifically argue that venture capital is an important complementary resource in the entrepreneurial process, providing entrepreneurs with access to critical financial assets as well as contributing to the development of local, regional, and national entrepreneurial networks. Accordingly, we expect venture capital flows to be higher in counties with underdeveloped entrepreneurial ecosystems, providing venture capitalists an opportunity to better leverage their financial and human resources, thus enhancing return prospects on the invested capital while contributing to the development and functioning of entrepreneurial ecosystems.},

abstract = {Cities have long played a vital role as industrial hotspots at the center of any nations' economic development. Each city has different resources and capabilities to develop specific industries, and economic partnerships between cities are essential to developing these resources into economic value. However, few city planners have clear directions in choosing partner cities, and their decisions are rarely based on appropriate data analysis. Based on Brookings Institution's Global City Initiative 2.0 project, we introduce a step-by-step guideline to city planners in finding global partner cities. Additionally, we share our own anecdote regarding how Philadelphia chose potential partner cities to attract more FDI in its biopharmaceutical. This case-based paper provides practical implications to city planners in prioritizing the market by global partnerships.},
